48×40 Pallets – 4way or 2way Pros and Cons
By admin on Feb 10, 2010 in Uncategorized
48×40 pallets are by far the most commonly used pallet in the US. Since the food industry is dominated by this size, it’s no wonder there are so many available on the market as used pallets. Many non-food related companies also use a 48×40 pallet because of the seemingly endless supply and resulting lower prices.
Most 48×40 pallets are 4way entry pallets, meaning the stringers or (runners) are notched to allow a forklift to enter the pallet from all 4 sides. While that can be an advantage in some cases, it may not be the best choice for everyone.
Here are three advantages to using 4way pallets.
1. Forklift operators have the ability to pickup the pallet no matter which direction it is facing.
2. By picking up 4way pallets from the side, the less floor space of a semi trailer can be used, allowing for 4 additional pallets to be loaded per trailer which can cut transportation costs.
3. If a company ends up accumulating or breaking 4way pallets, they are easy to sell or give away since most pallet companies are looking for this kind of pallet.
Here are some advantages to using 48×40 pallets which are 2 way entry.
1. The stringers or runners are solid from end to end, making it more durable and capable of supporting more weight when placed into a rack system.
2. They generally have not been repaired as many times, causing them to look newer, cleaner, and weigh less…all of which your customer will appreciate.
